Why Social Media?

Social media is defined as media for social interaction. To be most effective it should be easily accessible and variable in its distribution. Currently, social media is all web-based and the platforms allow communication among people to become interactive dialogues. Dialogues specifically take the form of user-generated content, which may be created and exchanged with web-based technologies. Businesses may involve themselves in social media as well and commonly refer to it as consumer-generated media (CGM). Although businesses may participate in social media, social media remains distinct from industrial media.

Industrial media, or traditional media, require significant resources to utilize on average and is the main distinguishing factor from social media. Examples of industrial media are print media (like newspapers or newsletters), television and motion pictures. Social media, on the other hand, is relatively inexpensive and easy to access and publish information. Although for social media to be effective, you need time and marketing skills, just like you do for traditional media.

Social media has several key advantages over industrial media besides cost efficiency. The lag time of communication distribution of industrial media is usually longer than social media distribution. Social media distribution is often instantaneous, although it may depend on the participant’s delay in response. Days or weeks may easily pass while industrial media is distributed, due to time required to complete printing, delivering or filming processes. Industrial media usually demands specialized skills to create content, whereas social media typically requires common skills to produce content. Social media is easy to alter too, which can be a significant problem for industrial media such as articles printed in magazines.

Industrial media is quickly adopting many of social media’s tools and as they do, a new hybrid is being formed. We at GlobalTranz are proud to be apart of the social media world on many networks. We hope you join us soon!
